Notte Bianca - Record number of visitors at St John’s Co-Cathedral
St John’s Co-Cathedral and Museum were open for Notte Bianca, Lejl Imdawwal and received a record number of Maltese and foreign visitors. Between 7.00 pm and 11.00 pm over 5,000 visited the church and the museum free of charge. The majority of visitors were Maltese, several expressing the wish to see the Perellos tapestry collection that everybody was talking about. The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation is planning to construct an extension to the museum to display the collection, the largest set in the world consisting of 29 pieces, for their appropriate display and preservation. During the Lejl Imdawwal the Foundation launched an exhibition which clearly explains the objective of the museum extension. The exhibition also comprises of a virtual reality walk-through of what the tapestry hall would look like. The exhibition includes the various restoration and conservation projects carried out by the Foundation during the last few years.
The exhibition was put up purposely for the general public to better understand the plans for the extension of the museum which will ultimately safeguard the famous collections and the wide range of unique artefacts which it houses. The new plans will also ease the flow of visitors into the Church thus protecting the Tombstones from further deterioration.
The public is invited to view the exhibition. Entrance is free of charge and is open from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm.
